Operational Use of Insar for Volcano Observatories: Experience in Local Reception at Montserrat

چکیده
A volcano observatory that is monitoring an erupting volcano(es) needs as much relevant data as it can get in a timely manner. InSAR has, potentially, a major role to play in delivering information on ground deformation and topographic change that can feed into the crisis management process. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) has been observing the ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano since 1995. We have been studying the ERS-derived InSAR data acquired for Montserrat by the Cotopaxi ground station. These data, mostly from mid-1997 onwards, are exclusively from ascending passes. This is because the satellite(s) is just out of range of the Cotopaxi ground station in the descending pass. Also these data are only usually available at MVO about 3 weeks or more after acquisition. In March-June 2000 we mounted an experiment to test the capabilities of local ground reception of both ascending and descending pass ERS SAR data at MVO and their immediate processing as InSAR products. This used a BURS/RAPIDS receiving system that was shipped to the island and set up in the observatory grounds. Here we report on the success of that deployment and the problems encountered.

Operational Use of InSAR for Volcano Observatories: Experience from Montserrat
Volcanoes as targets for InSAR vary greatly in the quality of their returned phase signal. There are two end-member volcano types from this perspective. Basaltic, low-relief shield volcanoes with frequent effusive eruptions and shallow magma reservoirs generally give excellent coherence and large magnitude ground deformations (~1m) that can be easily detected and modelled. However, their indivi...
متن کاملA Novel Volcano Smoke Antenna with Optimal Shape
The design of a novel volcano smoke antenna for UWB indoor applications is presented. The design method is based on a general description for the geometry of UWB monopole antennas which is capable of producing most possible shapes for these antennas. It is also compatible with different optimization methods. In addition to a volcano smoke antenna, this method is used to design two optimized mon...
متن کاملDetecting Volcano Deformation in InSAR using Deep learning
Globally 800 million people live within 100 km of a volcano and currently 1500 volcanoes are considered active, but half of these have no ground-based monitoring. Alternatively, satellite radar (InSAR) can be employed to observe volcanic ground deformation, which has shown a significant statistical link to eruptions (Biggs, et al., 2014). Modern satellites provide large coverage with high resol...
متن کاملMeasuring the Rate of Lava Effusion by Insar
The rate at which lava emerges from a volcano is a fundamental property of the dynamics of the eruption. Intensive field measurements can capture this. However, for many, often cloud-covered, volcanoes with long-lived eruptions, spaceborne InSAR provides a potentially useful source of information. Repeated DEM creation at intervals allows the changing thickness of the lava flow field to be meas...
متن کاملOn the absence of InSAR-detected volcano deformation spanning the 1995–1996 and 1999 eruptions of Shishaldin Volcano, Alaska
Shishaldin Volcano, a large, frequently active basaltic-andesite volcano located on Unimak Island in the Aleutian Arc of Alaska, had a minor eruption in 1995–1996 and a VEI 3 sub-Plinian basaltic eruption in 1999. We used 21 synthetic aperture radar images acquired by ERS-1, ERS-2, JERS-1, and RADARSAT-1 satellites to construct 12 coherent interferograms that span most of the 1993–2003 time int...
